Mammography
A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast. It is the most accurate method known for cancer detection and the detection of other breast problems. In the UK mammography is recommended every 3 years for all women between the ages of 50 and 70. However, the American Cancer Society recommends that all women should have a baseline mammographic screening at the age of 35 and yearly mammograms after the age of 40.
The Kent & Sussex Radiology Group perform a large number of mammograms on symptomatic patients referred by other doctors. However, you may self-refer for a screening mammogram, though if you have a breast lump it is important to see your own doctor and a breast specialist first. All mammograms are double reported (read by two of our radiologists independently) to increase the accuracy of diagnosis. This represents the gold standard of mammography reporting.
