Introduction
The Kent and Sussex Radiology Group are a group of seven consultant radiologists working around the Tunbridge Wells area. All are consultants in the local NHS hospitals (Kent and Sussex and Pembury)and some also undertake sessions at Sevenoaks. All have extensive specialist training and further subspecialist training in their particular fields of expertise.
The group have very close links with all the local GPs and consultants. This allows them to discuss patients and test results to produce accurate and relevant reports on your investigation. The referring doctor will always be sent a full report of your imaging study, usually within 24 hours. Urgent or unexpected findings are always phoned or faxed through and further referral can often be arranged by the radiologist if appropriate. Please contact us at The Nuffield Hospital Tunbridge Wells (01892 552916), the Spire Hospital Tunbridge Wells (01892 741107), Pembury Hospital (01892 633406) or The Kent and Sussex Hospital (01892 632289) if you have any further questions.
- Radiology
Radiology (or imaging) is a branch of medicine concerned with imaging of various organs or organ systems to help reach a diagnosis or monitor a condition. The imaging can vary from something as simple as a plain X-ray of a joint to something as complex as an MRI scan. A whole further branch (interventional radiology) is concerned with using imaging to guide therapies, ie: surgical type procedures performed through a pin-hole.
- Radiologist
A Radiologist is a consultant (specialist) who specialises in this field. He (or she) is a doctor who has then trained for a further 5-8 years in the speciality of radiology and usually several sub-specialist areas. All the radiologists in the Kent and Sussex Radiology Group are local consultants. All are registered by the Royal College of Radiologists as specialists and hold full specialist accreditation.
- Radiographer
A radiographer (or “technician” in the USA) is a para-medical professional. They will often help in the more specialist examinations and are responsible for taking many of the x-ray pictures and scans so that they can then be reported (interpreted) by the consultant radiologist.
